U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Jerry Smith, former H34 Chief Instructor, is presented a piece of cake as the oldest Marine present during the ceremony of the 249th Marine Corps Birthday Ball at Caesars Superdome, New Orleans, Nov. 2, 2024. At each Marine Corps Birthday Ball, a piece of cake is passed from the oldest Marine present to the youngest Marine, signifying the passing of experience and knowledge from the old to the young of the Corps.
