U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Van McCarty, adjutant general for South Carolina, service members, families and friends gather together at the South Carolina Veterans Memorial located at the S.C. State House on Gervais Street, during a Wreaths Across America ceremony, Dec. 9 2024, Columbia, South Carolina. The annual ceremony was held in partnership with Wreaths Across America and it is a way to remember, honor and teach the general public about veterans who have given their life in the name of freedom to our nation, and in remembrance of prisoners of war. The event also brings awareness to National Wreaths Across America Day, which is when thousands of wreaths will be placed on graves across the nation, and will take place on Dec. 14.
