U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Benjamin Pimentel, a senior technical research analyst with Combat Development and Integration, and defense technology industry professionals attend a 5G network systems demonstration at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Dec. 5, 2024. Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity, Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, and Marine Air Control Group 38, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, alongside civilian technology and defense partners, conducted a series of 5G mobile network enabled operations, 3-Dec. 5. As part of the demonstration, Marines with Marine Air Support Squadron 3, MACG-38, used the Open Systems Interoperable and Reconfigurable Infrastructure Solution 5G communications network infrastructure to connect the AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar to the Multifunctional Air Operations Center in support of exercise Steel Knight 24. Steel Knight is an annual exercise that takes place in multiple locations across the Southwest that allows I Marine Expeditionary Force to train as a full Marine Air-Ground Task Force and better integrate with joint and naval forces.
