A first responder pulls a needle out of the catheter after holding the Needle chest decompression (NCD) for ten seconds during a tactical medicine for high risk first responders course at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa, on June 20th, 2024. The student used a NCD to alleviate the accumulation of air in the chest cavity, known as a tension pneumothorax. First Responders tackled realistic scenarios to enhance their readiness for real-life emergencies. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Katharine Schmidt)
