Col. Michael Scanlon, Oklahoma Army National Guard’s deputy chief of staff for operations, is pinned to the rank of colonel during his promotion ceremony held at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Norman, Oklahoma, Dec. 18, 2024. The colonel rank insignia used at the promotion ceremony was originally used to pin Scanlon’s great aunt, Col. Mary Hallaren, who was the first woman promoted to colonel in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in 1947. Hallaren gifted her insignia to Scanlon's father upon his promotion to colonel, who then passed it along to his son, symbolizing three generations of colonels to wear this insignia.
