Japan’s Izumo-class multi-functional destroyer JS Kaga (DDH-184) passes Naval Air Station North Island and the Nimitz Class aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in San Diego on the morning of Nov. 8. The Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force ship’s visit came after three weeks of F-35B Lightning II trials off Southern California. Test pilots from the United States and the United Kingdom flew the F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL), testing Kaga’s recent modifications and preparing the ship for fixed-wing flight operations.
