U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Nicholas Hancock, right, a weapon systems officer, reviews safety procedures with Cpl. Jacob Combs, an aircraft electrical system technician, both with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 312, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, before Combs takes off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, in an F/A-18D Hornet aircraft, Dec. 18, 2024. VMFA-312 is temporarily augmenting MAG-12, 1st MAW under the Unit Deployment Program, which aims to provide squadrons stationed in the continental United States with experience training in the Indo-Pacific. High-performing Marines with VMFA-312 were recognized and rewarded with the opportunity to fly in the back seat of an F/A-18D Hornet aircraft.
