Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency members prepare to load a casket during a disinterment ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Jan. 6, 2025. The ceremony was part of DPAA’s West Loch Project:, an ongoing effort to disinter, transport, and identify service members who died in the West Loch disaster during World War II. The disaster occurred in 1944, when a series of explosions on multiple ships killed or wounded 132 confirmed service members and damaged or sank numerous vessels during preparations for the invasion of Saipan. The remains were taken to the DPAA laboratory on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for further scientific analysis and possible identification. (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Kathy Duran)
