    Sherman Byrd is the first Black sailor to graduate from Naval School of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (NAVSCOLEOD). Byrd joined the Navy on December 26, 1947 at the age of seventeen. Following Boot Camp in San Diego, he served on four ships, advancing from Seaman Recruit to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class, whereupon he graduated from Deep Sea Diving School April, 1955. In July, 1957, Byrd graduated from the elite Naval School Underwater Swimmers in Key West, Florida. One year later he graduated from the Naval School of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (NAVSCOLEOD) in Indian Head, Maryland with Class 04B-58 in 1958. After graduation, it was back to sea, serving aboard the aircraft carriers, USS Randolph (CVA-15) and USS Independence (CVA-62), later heading to Seal Beach, CA where he was promoted to Boatswain’s Mate First Class. In May, 1963 BM1 Byrd was promoted to Chief Boatswain’s Mate. The following year Byrd became an instructor at NAVSCOLEOD. Three years later in November, 1967, he advanced to Senior Chief Boatswain’s Mate. Byrd took orders to EODGRULANT at Fort Story in August, 1968 and was promoted to Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate one year later. (Artwork by Willie C. P. Kendrick III)
