Doris ("Dorie") Miller enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September 1939 as a Mess Attendant. Miller started competition boxing, becoming the ship's heavyweight champion on the to the Colorado-class battleship West Virginia (BB-48). December 7, 1941, Miller helped carry wounded sailors to safety during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Miller then manned an anti-aircraft gun, despite no prior training in gunnery. According to Miller and other eye witnesses’ claims, Miller shot down between four to six enemy aircraft. Miller received the Navy Cross from Admiral Chester Nimitz on May 27, 1942. Miller lost his life, along with 55 officers and 590 enlisted crew when Japanese submarine I-175 sank the USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56) southeast of Makin Island, Gilbert Islands. The USS Miller (DE-1091) was named in his honor. The Ford-class nuclear powered aircraft carrier, CVN-81, will be named after Mess Attendant First Class Doris Miller. (Artwork by Willie C. P.
