U.S. Air Force Col. William Watkins, 22nd Air Task Force commander, explains the mission of the 22nd ATF during an all-call at Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, Jan. 16, 2025. During the all-call, 22nd ATF and 22nd Combat Air Base Squadron leaders discussed the roles and responsibilities of both units. The 22nd ATF was activated at Fairchild AFB on Sept. 23, 2024 and the 22nd CABS was activated at Travis AFB on Oct. 1, 2024. The Air Force designed ATFs to be “pathfinders” whose role is to take lessons learned from their Air Force Force Generation (AFFORGEN) deployment cycle to better optimize the transition to the next unit of action. The establishment of ATFs support the Air Force’s endeavors to provide a definable unit of action and establish a sustainable pace for posturing forces.
