Captain Mark “Keala” Kimura poses for a photo while onboard the Hōkūleʻa after the canoe arrived at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii on Jan. 18, 2025 when he served as as the captain of Hōkūleʻa’s escort boat (left), which accompanied Hōkūleʻa as she made her to Pearl Harbor. Kimura sailed on several legs of Hōkūleʻa’s Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage (2013-2019) and Kimura has captained the escort vessel on several other occasions and served as captain of Hikianalia with the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS). Hōkūleʻa has been described as a symbol of resilience, revival, cultural pride, environmental stewardship, peace, and hope. During the canoe’s recent visit to Pearl Harbor, she became a symbol of human connection. (U.S. Navy photo by Kyler Hood)
