A project manager with the Office in Charge of Construction (OICC) Marine Corps Marianas (MCM) holds old machine gun rounds found buried in the jungles of northern Guam. A stack of scrap metal collected during ground clearing for the construction of Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz can be seen in the background. This particular project required combing through thousands of cubic yards of dirt.
The clearing and grading process for military construction on Guam is done carefully and methodically, inch by inch. Unexploded Ordnance (UCO) Technicians scan every square foot of freshly turned dirt from the safety of a blast box to look for signs of UXO or archeological artifacts. Some project sites are particularly challenging due to excessive amounts of metal waste and man-made debris that was left in the jungle decades ago.
