Seaman 1st Class Aaron L. McMurtrey, 27, of Durant, Oklahoma, killed during World War II, was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025. His niece, Sharon Gunselman, and other family members were in attendance.
On Dec. 7, 1941, McMurtrey was assigned to the battleship USS California, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The USS California sustained multiple torpedo and bomb hits, which caused it catch fire and slowly flood. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 103 crewmen, including McMurtrey. He was buried as an Unknown at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu until 2018 when Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency disinterred the 25 USS California Unknowns in order to identify them.
McMurtrey was accounted for July 31, 2024. DPAA scientists used anthropological analysis and scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial and Y chromosome DNA analysis to identify him.
