U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Melissa Mendez, first sergeant for the 153rd Security Forces Squadron, Wyoming Air National Guard, balances her dual role as a leader in uniform and a primary prevention specialist. Mendez was recognized as the 2024 Integrated Primary Prevention Specialist of the Year, one of only three selected nationwide and the only lead recipient. In her prevention role, she works to address challenges before they escalate, fostering a positive environment for service members across Wyoming’s 97,000 square miles. “People are my passion,” Mendez said. “If we can support individuals and help them thrive, we’re not just building stronger teams—we’re creating a better future for everyone.” (U.S. Army National Guard photo illustration by Spc.
