U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 99th Civil Engineer Squadron, 99th Mission Support Group, 99th Airbase Wing Nellis Air Base, Nevada disassemble hazardous lithium-ion batteries taken from fire-damaged battery wall units in Altadena, California, Feb. 15, 2025. Active-duty service members, along with other Department of Defense assets, are supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Environmental Protection Agency wildfire hazardous waste cleanup operations around the Los Angeles County area as part of U.S. Northern Command’s assigned Defense Support of Civil Authorities. At the request of the FEMA, NORTHCOM deployed approximately 170 active-duty personnel to assist EPA-led teams with cleanup of wildfire hazardous waste from the Eaton and Palisades fires in California. U.S. Army North, NORTHCOM’s Joint Force Land Component Command, is overseeing the military’s DSCA efforts, while Joint Task Force Civil Support, Fort Eustis, Virginia, is providing on-the-ground command and control of active-duty personnel. Work to remove the hazardous materials is phase one of the federal cleanup response to ensure the safety of the residents by preventing these materials from being released into the environment.
