U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Jmari Mellerson, a motor transport dispatcher with Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, carries the division colors during a ceremony honoring John Basilone at Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial in La Jolla, California, Feb. 19, 2025. Basilone, who earned the Medal of Honor while fighting on Guadalcanal, was killed in action Feb. 19, 1945, during the battle of Iwo Jima. Mellerson is a native of South Carolina.
