LIMA, Peru (Feb. 19, 2025) Lorena Tapia, with the Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) SOUTH Parasitology department, describes the different types of malaria caused by various species of the Plasmodium parasite to visiting leadership from the Peruvian military. Part of the Navy Medicine Research & Development enterprise, NAMRU SOUTH conducts research on a wide range of infectious diseases of military and public health significance and supports Global Health Engagement through surveillance of those diseases, including dengue fever, malaria, diarrheal diseases and antimicrobial-resistant infections.
