Capt. J. T. Pianetta (left), Commodore, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing (CPRW) 10, and Cmdr. John Sadler, Commanding Officer, Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 1, speak to Sailors and other guests during a sundowning ceremony for the P-3C Orion at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island, Washington, Feb. 20, 2025. The Navy began a seven-year transition from the P-3C Orion to the P-8A Poseidon in 2012. All of the active-duty P-3 squadrons successfully transitioned to the P-8 by the Spring of 2020. VQ-1, the ‘World Watchers,’ flew the P-3C Orion and a series of EP-3 Aries from 1969-2025. The final P-3 on NAS Whidbey Island was utilized by VQ-1 as a pilot proficiency training aircraft. Aircraft 588, which departed NAS Whidbey Island on Feb. 21, 2025, was the last P-3 platform to operate from the base when it departed on its final flight.
