U.S. Army Lt. Col. Nathan Beck, Chief of the V Corps Civil Liaison Team, left, and Command Sgt. Maj. Jason Jones, Command Sgt. Maj. of U.S. Army Garrison Poland, right, render honors at a memorial site dedicated to the “Cursed Soldiers," Poznan, Poland, March 1, 2025. The Polish National Day of Remembrance on March 1, recognizes Poland’s underground anti-communist army (1944-1953). The March 1 date corresponds to the date in 1951 when seven members of one regional underground group’s leadership were executed at Mokotów prison in Warsaw. Tens of thousands of actual or suspected members of the underground army were killed or otherwise detained in numerous Soviet detention camps in Poland or the Soviet Union from 1944 until 1956, when a general amnesty for the remaining 35,000 detainees was declared.
