    Marines from the Marine Band, “The President’s Own”, and the Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. (8th and I) conduct military funeral honors with funeral escort for U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Norman Smith in Section 55 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, Wednesday March 5, 2025.

    Commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Marine Corps Officers Candidate course in December 1955, Smith served in the Marine Corps for over 50 years, including in the Vietnam War.

    Smith’s decorations and awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with gold star in lieu of a second award, and Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” and gold star in lieu of a second award.

    Smith’s spouse, Susan Smith, received the U.S. flag from his funeral service.
