250306-N-GB257-1007 N. Charleston, SC (March 6, 2025) A team of scientists and engineers from Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic set up an optical gimbal and secure a Lambertian reflector plate target to a vehicle. The gimbal is used to acquire and track targets to support the Naval Innovative Science and Engineering (NISE) Rapid Prototype Project, AirBorne System for Optical Relay and Broadcast (ABSORB). The project addresses the direct line-of-sight constraint of traditional free space optical communications systems by introducing a multi-access, non-line-of-sight approach to establish links between users. The optical gimbal is an assembly of commercial off-the-shelf products (short-wave infrared camera, optical tube assembly, laser beam expander, stepper motors) and 3D-printed mounts and enclosures.
