South Carolina National Guard service members and guest participants pose at an awards
ceremony for the winners of the South Carolina phase of the Best Warrior Competition (BWC) at
McCrady Training Center, Eastover, South Carolina, Feb. 28, 2025. The BWC is a multi-day event
promoting excellence and resiliency among all National Guard Soldiers. The BWC challenges the
mental and physical strength of each competitor, as well as testing their individual combat skills and
doctrinal knowledge. The event consists of a 12-mile ruck march, several weapon use and
maintenance tasks, combat medical-care simulations, marksmanship ranges, and land navigation.
At the end of the competition, the highest total-scoring lower-enlisted Soldier and noncommissioned
officer (NCO) are nominated Soldier of the Year and NCO of the Year respectively. The BWC will
continue with a series of regional events, followed by a culminating national BWC finale. (U.S. Army
