A Great Blue Heron flies along a flood canal that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers uses in high water situations to pump flood waters from the Natomas Basin up and over the Garden Highway and into the Sacramento River. When not in use, the canal is a great place to find a wide range of birds foraging for food ranging from fish and reptiles to rodents and insects. While the bird is quite the giant, standing four feet tall, it weighs less than six pounds. Great Blue Herons can be found throughout the Pacific Northwest, and from southern Alaska all the way down into various regions of California.
