With a quick tug, the daughter of Army 2nd Lt. Jason Barber rips the Army staff sergeant stripes off her father's uniform at his commissioning ceremony held here at the North Carolina National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters, March 8. Barber earned his new rank through a direct commission. Direct commissions promote enlisted soldiers to the officer corps through a very competitive process with senior Guard leaders at the highest levels making the final decision. "I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself," said Barber. (U.S. Army Photo by Sgt. 1st Class Robert Jordan, North Carolina National Guard Public Affairs)
