Norfolk, Va., (Apr. 2, 2025) – Fifty Navy medical reservists assigned to hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) received for the first time ever a familiarization tour and lunch aboard fleet replenishment oiler USNS Joshua Humphreys (T-AO 188), Apr. 1. The ship tour was very educational for us and the lunch was outstanding, said LT Megan F. Costello, lead planner for the tour event. “Many thanks to the captain and crew for a wonderful experience from start to finish.”

Responsible for executing the tour event was Joshua Humphreys' Operations Officer Larry J. Gonzales who ensured the reserve unit received an informative guided tour by skilled civil service mariners assigned to the vessel. “Our CIVMARS provided the reservists with a full complementary walking tour of the vessel that offered not only invaluable professional development for them, but it also significantly enhanced the reservists’ understanding of operational logistics and interdepartmental collaboration. Likewise, Chief Mate
Miles P. Farber gave a detailed brief that addressed procedures for the efficient and safe transfer of medical supplies to other vessels at sea. This is a critical aspect of our operational readiness.”

Lastly, Ship Master Captain Patrick T. Christian played a key role in the visit by engaging in productive discussions with the reserve unit to help them to not only better understand their responsibilities but to also strengthen the lines of communication between the medical and CIVMAR communities, Gonzalez said.

The Joshua Humphreys’ crew is made up of all civilians with no active-duty service. They each have U.S. Coast Guard credentials and are Merchant Marines by trade who gladly serve Military Sealift Command, Gonzales said.
