The ceremony was held in honor of Hughes, who served the Marine Corps for 28 faithful years. Hughes served throughout his career as an infantry Marine and scout sniper, responding to crisis and participating in combat operations around the world. He most recently served with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit during its Western Pacific deployment in 2024 as the operations chief, helping to plan every mission and overseeing the daily activities of the landing force operations center.
