250405-N-GR655-1065 GROTON, Connecticut (April 5, 2025) – Secretary of the Navy John Phelan and Vice Adm. Rob Gaucher, commander of the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Force, take their place on the podium during a commissioning ceremony for the fast-attack submarine USS Iowa (SSN 797) in Groton, Connecticut, April 5, 2025. The ceremony culminated a years-long process of commissioning SSN 797, the first submarine and third naval vessel named for the Hawkeye State. The fast-attack submarine USS Iowa and crew operate under Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 4 whose primary mission is to provide fast-attack submarines that are ready, prepared, and committed to meet the unique challenges of undersea combat and deployed operations in unforgiving environments across the globe.
