Bringing remote technical assistance to sailors at sea is possible with the Augmented Reality Maintenance System, or ARMS. ARMS enables shoreside or remote subject matter experts to guide sailors through complex maintenance procedures using a video conferencing platform similar to Microsoft Teams so the sailors can rapidly restore ship systems. ARMS was initially designed in 2018 by Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) Aircraft Division Lakehurst’s Collaborative Research, Engineering, Analysis and Training in Immersive Virtual Environment, or CREATIVE, Laboratory to deliver troubleshooting and repair support to deployed maintainers. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD) partnered with NAWC Lakehurst in 2021 to modify and deploy the system to the surface fleet. NSWC PHD aims to use ARMS for troubleshooting combat systems while ships are at sea, with an eye toward eventually eliminating the need for engineers and other experts to travel to ships for onsite technical assistance.
