The U.S. Navy launches a Poseidon C3 missile from the USS James K. Polk (SSBN 645 - Gold) at 3:15 p.m. on July 23, 1983, during Demonstration and Shakedown Operation 51. This was the 76th Poseidon C3 launched. The C3 was a two-stage, solid-propellant missile capable being launched from a submerged submarine. The U.S. Navy maintained the C3 Poseidon missiles until the last one was offloaded in September 1992.
