U.S. Air Force students with the 332nd and 335th Training Squadrons at Keesler Air Force Base (AFB), Miss., prepare to be evacuated to Sheppard AFB, Texas, aboard a C-17 Globemaster III from the 58th Airlift Squadron, Altus AFB, Okla., on Sept. 1, 2005. More than 2400 students and non-essential personnel will be evacuated from Keesler due to the fact that Hurricane Katrina has left Keesler without water and power for an undetermined amount of time. Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf Coast with wind gusts in excess of 140 miles per hour, flattened buildings, and flooded areas from Florida to Louisiana. Millions of people were left without power and hundreds of thousands homeless. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Mike Buytas)
