James Gorman, right, is honored with a certificate of appreciation and challenge coin by Chief Mark Sisson of the Christiansburg Police Department for his actions in subduing a shooter at New River Community College’s New River Valley Mall campus. Gorman, who served as a hydraulics mechanic in the Marine Corps from 1973-1977, faced the gunman while unarmed and off duty without hesitation, putting an end to what could have otherwise been an even more tragic event. Sisson is also a former Marine, having served from 1991-1998.
