The number 13 is displayed on the USS Yorktown’s (CV-10) island in honor of the USS Franklin (CV-13), as the surviving crewmembers gather for their final reunion May 17, 2013, at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, Mount Pleasant, S.C. The Franklin participated in Pacific Theater operations during World War II and was in service from 1944 to 1945. The ship is best known for the March 19, 1945 attack, when two Japanese bombs struck the ship. The Franklin earned the designation as the most heavily damaged U.S. aircraft carrier to survive World War II and the ship and crew remain the most decorated in U.S. Navy history – earning two Medals of Honor, 19 Navy Crosses, 22 Silver Stars and 1,100 Purple Hearts.
