I Corps Deputy Commanding General Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan salutes and honors those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense for our country, for the love of each other, their families and freedom May 27 at Fort Vancouver, Wash., alongside a member of the Military Appreciation Committee. Once called Decoration Day, dating back to the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln once said, “Any nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure.” Today, the tradition has endured and is now called Memorial Day. Memorial Day is the ultimate expression of the love that these men and women gave when they laid down their lives for one another and to their country, said Buchanan. The Vancouver Community Military Appreciation Committee and Waste Connections sponsored the memorial service and was hosted by the National Park Service and city of Vancouver.
