First Lt. Michael A. Lashutka, executive officer, 1/7, and Franklin, Ohio native, receives the Bronze Star with Combat V during a ceremony held May 23, 2013. Lashutka, a platoon leader for 1st Platoon at the time, sustained a gunshot wound to the arm when his element came under fire. Despite his injury, Lashutka courageously continued to direct the evacuation of seven casualties and facilitated fire support on five enemy fighting positions. He then used the impacts made by artillery rounds as cover to transport the casualties to the company’s mobile section to be evacuated.
