Private First Class Davante Farrow, an infantryman serving with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, takes a bite out of a birthday cake during a ball held in honor of the 5th Marines’ 96th birthday here, June 6, 2013. Farron, an 18-year-old native of Kansas City, Mo., was the youngest Marine present during the ball. The Fighting Fifth is recognized as the most decorated regiment in the Marine Corps. Marines and sailors of the regiment recently earned and added the Afghanistan Campaign streamer to their battle colors after a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan as Regimental Combat Team 5 from August 2011 to August 2012. The regiment also unveiled a memorial that honors Marines and sailors who served with 5th Marines or the regiment’s subordinate units who sacrificed their lives during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
