Family and friends of Col. Walton Nichols, who commanded Volk Field Air National Guard Base from 1980-1984, gather around a granite bench bearing his name in front of the Volk Field conference center. Nichols, who passed away March 27, 2013, was honored during a June 13 memorial service at Volk Field, Wis., with his name emblazoned on a static display Air Force F-102. He is credited with significant upgrades to the Air National Guard base that resulted in its expanded use as a training facility. (Wisconsin National Guard photo by Vaughn R. Larson)
