John Turco, center, a veterinarian, both with the 719th Medical Detachment Veterinary Services based in Fort Sheridan, Ill., explain how to change bandages to a Panamanian medical professional after a successful surgery on a baby howler monkey during Beyond the Horizon (BTH) at Metete, Panama, June 6, 2013. The monkey was injured after falling from a tree, and due to extensive damage, its tail required amputation. The veterinary Service members worked with Panamanian medical staff to provide free medical care to animals belonging to local residents at the medical readiness training exercises. BTH is a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff-directed, U.S. Southern Command-sponsored joint and combined field training humanitarian exercise in which troops specializing in engineering, construction and health care provide much-needed services to communities in need while receiving valuable deployment training and building important relationships with partner nations.
