    Marine Corps Recruiting Command

Rct. Tyrell Watson, 19, Platoon 2048, Echo Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, reads scripture during an hour of free time June 16, 2013. Recruits are given an hour at the end of the training day to relax and prepare for the next day. The one hour of free time is only spent inside the barracks and is intended to be a relief period from the training day's 15 hours of close supervision and interaction between recruits and drill instructors. Watson is from Hundred, W.Va., and is scheduled to graduate June 28, 2013. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training 50 percent of males and 100 percent females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. David Bessey)
