Rct. Kassandra Felling, Platoon 4024, assists Rct. Latashia Leath, Platoon 4025, with her gas mask June 11, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The recruits of Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, were given the training to become confident in their abilities to use the protective mask while exposed to the effects of nonlethal tear gas. Felling, 19, from North English, Iowa, and Leath, 20, from Blanchester, Ohio, are scheduled to graduate Aug. 2, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
