Rct. Naadia Guidry, Platoon 4032, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, practices a forward shoulder roll during a martial arts training session July 24, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. These techniques are part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, which incorporates mental, moral and character discipline into hand-to-hand combat skills to help transform civilians into Marines. Guidry, an 18-year-old New Orleans native, must earn her tan belt, the first level in the program, before graduating. November Company is scheduled to graduate Oct. 4, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
