Rear Adm. James F. Caldwell Jr., commander of Submarine Force U.S. Pacific Fleet, addresses sailors during his visit to the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39). Caldwell presented the Meritorious Unit Commendation award to Emory S. Land for serving as the Submarine Lead Maintenance Activity (LMA) for the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility from Nov. 1, 2011 to Oct. 31, 2012. Homeported in Diego Garcia, Emory S. Land is a forward deployed expeditionary submarine tender on an extended deployment conducting coordinated tended moorings and afloat maintenance in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
