Spc. Michael Garvey, from Las Crucas, N.M., provides security as his fellow Soldiers from 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) search the inside of a home in northern Iraq near the Syrian border on Aug. 4, 2004. The residents are suspected of smuggling weapons into Iraq from Syria and distributing them to terrorist cells throughout the country. Garvey and his fellow Stryker Brigade Soldiers took part in Operation Phantom Linebacker, an operation designed to decrease the flow of weapons and explosives across the Syrian border into Iraq. They detained 20 people for questioning. Terrorists have been suspected of using the region as a haven from which they conduct their attacks.
