Rct. Timothy Rivard strikes a winning blow against Rct. Geovanni Deras, both with Platoon 1077, Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, during pugil stick training July 29, 2013, at Parris Island's Leatherneck Square. Recruits fought against each other in two 15-second matches. Rivard, a 19-year-old native of Lowell, Mass., and Deras, an 18-year-old native of Queens, N.Y., are scheduled to graduate Oct. 11, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
