Recruits of Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, wait to descend the rappel tower July 23, 2013, at the combat training area on Parris Island, S.C. The recruits wore gloves, safety harnesses and helmets while going down the 47-foot tower. Recruits undergo this training to help prepare them for navigating difficult terrain, gaining access to buildings and deploying from helicopters. Delta Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 13, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
