LATHROP, Mo. – As they approach their senior year in high school, students are routinely challenged with making decisions that will take them down their career paths. Which is the best route for them? Should they consider a traditional college, technical school, the military or enter the workforce? There are many choices.

Sgt. 1st Class Jordan Bennett of the Missouri Army National Guard recently met with nearly 60 juniors at Lathrop High School and presented the program, Career Direction, to offer a little guidance.

He concentrated on helping the students become more focused on their futures and explored what options they have.

Career Direction is a no-cost guidance program that has helped millions of high school students plan for their futures. It is sponsored and presented by the Army National Guard and is designed to support and enhance the high school’s career development program.

Jennifer Naughton, counselor at Lathrop High School, welcomed the opportunity to have real-world experiences offered to her students.

“As a counselor I make sure that we are not just educating academically, but also through career development and personal and social development,” said Naughton. “We try to make our environment comprehensive. Part of my job is career development from their freshman to senior year, letting them know what options are out there.”

Career Direction is one of the programs the National Guard uses to help augment schools’ curriculum by exploring career options.

“I wish I had a class like this to help me discover my interests,” said Bennett. “It’s all about your interests and finding a good fit when choosing a career or education path.”

Naughton said that each of her students should take away something different from the experience.

“They are all going down different paths, so the one thing I want them to take away from this is something they can apply to their future when they are seniors,” said Naughton. “With some, their biggest problem is going to be how to find scholarships. With others it’s going to be what to do after school. Am I going to go to college? Am I going to go into the military? What’s the best fit for me?”

In a short amount of time, Bennett was able touch on several topics such as career interests, skills sets, scholarships and building resumes.

“I’m very appreciative of all of our military recruiters,” said Naughton. “They do a wonderful job. If it wasn’t for these fine gentlemen and ladies I know that my counseling program wouldn’t be as strong.”
