MARYVILLE, Mo. – Tim Akins, of Albany, was recently promoted to the rank of master sergeant in the Missouri Army National Guard and now serves as the full-time operations sergeant with Headquarters, Headquarters Battalion, 1-129th Field Artillery in Maryville.

Akins makes the shift after working as the readiness noncommissioned officer for Battery A, 1-129th Field Artillery in Albany for the past several years. He has been a citizen-soldier since 1997 and the majority of his service has been with the Albany unit. From 1992-1996 Akins also served in the field artillery with U.S. Marine Corps.

With this new position Akins supervises the training operations of the battalion.

“It’s a lot more responsibility,” said Akins. “Instead of supervising employees in one location as a readiness NCO does, now I supervise employees in five locations.”

Currently Akins is working on planning this year’s annual training event which will include a live-fire exercise in June at Fort Riley, Kan. It involves the coordination of 18 lightweight howitzers which fires 155 mm rounds.

“That’s what I’m working hot and heavy now,” said Akins.

“Something that is new to me after working at the unit level is that I now request ranges, all of the ammunition, and coordinate all of those little things you have to do to make an operation like that happen.”

The battalion is comprised of more than 500 soldiers and is headquartered in Maryville. It maintains three firing batteries in Albany, Chillicothe and Independence, along with the 1128th Forward Support Company in Marshall, which provides combat service support capabilities. The 1-129th is Missouri’s only field artillery unit.

Akins is a 1992 graduate of Savannah High School.
