CARY, N.C. - Members of the North Carolina National Guard’s Detachment 1, B Company, 2 - 151st Aviation Regiment unveiled a new unit patch concept at their family day held at North Cary Park here, April 7.

The unit, now known as the “Night Owls,” had their new emblem designed by Travis Getz, a local graphic designer who founded Squadron Store, a company that delivers morale-building military support artwork to U.S. and Allied units.

The emblem was a collaborative effort between the Getz and unit members to find a proper mascot that would better represent the efforts of the 2-151st.

The unit’s airborne mission is symbolized by an Owl flying at night over a shield emblazoned with the North Carolina Flag.

The design highlights the unit’s counter-drug and hurricane relief missions are referenced in the banner text which reads:

“Evildoers & citizens in peril be advised … we’re coming for you.”

These themes are further symbolized by a dead snake and lightning bolt hidden in the owl’s wings. The owl is removing a snake from the flag, representing the Night Owls’ determination to counter threats to North Carolina citizens.

The aviators currently fly UH-72 Lakota helicopters with specialized equipment for counter drug missions supporting law enforcement and airborne search and rescue.

The patches create esprit de corps and pride within the unit; Getz was very humbled by the opportunity to give something back to the military for their service to our nation.

“Thank you to everyone in the unit for keeping us safe from drug cartels and hurricanes,” said Getz.

A special gift was also unveiled at the event – a poster design created to honor the Night Owls. Getz created the design while working on the unit emblem. A World War II veteran, who served as a B-17 crewman in the skies over Europe and supports Squadron Store’s mission of building morale for those in harm’s way, donated the artist’s proof print and frame.

Getz also presented an artist’s proof donated by an anonymous donor who was a crew member of the B-17 bomber aircraft, nicknamed, "Gravel Gertie," which served in the skies over Europe during WWII. The print included a special message to the unit that thanked them for their service and will hang in 2-151st’s classroom as a morale-building initiative for the unit.

Following the unveiling, members of the 2-151st were able to sign up to receive more information about purchasing the final signed and numbered screen-printed poster for themselves when available.

Outgoing commanding officer, Army Capt. Scott Tucker was given a unit guide on framed with a Night Owls patch during the festivities.

The unveiling was part of the unit's family day events that included a picnic lunch, games for families and a chance to relax and unwind with each other away from duty.
