GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany – Five soldiers assigned to the Defense Department’s George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies received German medals for marksmanship June 19.

The German Armed Forces Badge for Weapons Proficiency, or Schutzenschnur, badges from the Bundeswehr were awarded by the German commandant of the NATO School German army Col. Enrico Werner, during a ceremony in Oberammergau, Germany.

The recipients and their medals include: Army Sgts. 1st Class Drexel Barayuga, Marshall Center senior enlisted adviser (silver); Ekaterina Belova, first sergeant for the Partner Language Training Center Europe (silver); Derrick Chambers, noncommissioned officer in charge of military human resources (silver); and Army Sgts. Manuel Espaillat (gold) and Mirelle Ngominlend (bronze), supply clerks for the center.

Awarding the medals were a culmination of two separate qualification rounds March 16 and April 13 that involved Bavaria Military Community Garmisch local military police, NATO School soldiers and Marshall Center soldiers.

The decoration is awarded to German military personnel of all grades, but is only allowed to be worn by enlisted members. Officers can receive the award, although it is not currently authorized to be worn on their uniforms. The badge is one of the few foreign awards requiring no individual approval request to be forwarded up the serviceman's chain of command to the U.S. Senate for acceptance.

The bronze award is earned for shooting a rifle, pistol and machine pistol, with all scores in the “bronze” qualifying area. To earn silver, a soldier must fire a pistol, rifle or machine pistol, and either a machine gun or anti-tank weapon, with all scores in the “silver” zone. Gold is awarded for shooting pistol, rifle or machine pistol, and a machine gun or anti-tank weapon, with all gold marks.

The badges will be a permanent part of the recipients’ official records.
