Story by Army Maj. Mark Maloy,
    105th Military Police Battalion

RAPID CITY, S.D. - Soldiers of the North Carolina National Guard’s 105th Military Police Battalion Headquarters, out of Asheville, N.C., completed annual training here, June 8–22.

They joined more than 3,500 fellow service members from 11 states and four nations at the 29th Annual Golden Coyote Exercise in southeastern South Dakota and eastern Wyoming.

The two-week exercise tested Army National Guard, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve members and foreign troops mission essential tasks including area security, force protection and law and order missions.

The soldiers also used their skills on humanitarian missions aiding local Native American reservations.

Engineers completed walkway bridges and recreation areas for use by the local tribes.

Medical units got valuable real-world practice by inoculations of animals.

Transportation convoys delivered winter fuel to community buildings.

North Carolina National Guard leadership from the battalion managed soldiers from the U.S. Army Reserve’s 94th Military Police Company from New Hampshire, the Pennsylvania Army National Guard’s 28th Military Police Company and a platoon of soldiers from the Danish Home Guard.

Cooperation across branch, service, tribe and even nation was not the only theme of the training. The 11 teams, representing Canadian, Danish, U.S. Air Force, North Carolina and South Dakota National Guard, and U.S. Navy personnel competed for the Golden Coyote Cup.

The cup is a nine-hour blend of physical and mental challenges.

The soldiers tested the mind by navigating over unfamiliar territory, planning how to best obstacles on a confidence course and treating a simulated injury to a team member.

The body got its turn. Competitors in full uniform, helmet and gloves start by sprinting to a medical stretcher loaded with a case of rations and a five-gallon can of water. Together they race 2.2 more miles.

A log sawing competition, obstacle course, and orienteering await the teams as the high temperature approached 90 degrees.

For the final elimination event, the competitors must roll a nearly 150-pound Humvee tire 75-yards. Then the team must load it onto a parked two-and-a-half–ton Humvee and push it to the finish line.

A team from the 105th lead by the unit’s commander, Army Lt. Col. Jerry E. Baird Jr., beat the U.S. Navy and Air Force teams earning third place overall.

These multi-unit exercises keep soldiers’ skills ready to deploy for local, state, national and international duty.
